One Liner

Zettelkasten is a personal note-taking tool for thinking and writing. It has a feature to make a web of thought possible. It emphasises connection, not a collection.

Introduction to the Zettelkasten Method

Niklas Luhmann was a highly productive social scientist. He published 70 books, over 600 articles, and 150 unfinished manuscripts.

Why are we so interested in Luhmann’s Zettelkasten?

  • We can improve the connectivity of our thoughts. It is possible because instead of “boxing” or categories our notes, instead, we let them flow. Naturally, our brain’s connection is like a dot of ideas and is connected by the relevancy of our lives.
  • We can be more productive and we stop wasting our efforts. Have you ever encountered a problem that you already solved in the past but today you forgot how to do it? You’ll go googling again and click the same link that only God knows when click it. It is exhausting. That’s why personal knowledge management tools matter.
  • We can tackle more complex problems. It is very difficult to keep all the information in our temporary memory. This method allows us to concentrate on the problem and take a step back to our knowledge to look at it with a clear vision.
  • Normal note-taking will create a mess over time. On the other hand, the Zettelkasten method will scale itself automatically to the size of the problem we’re tackling as the problem grows, our knowledge grows. It just needs patience and persistence.

Luhmann said

What are we to do with what we have written down? Certainly, at first, we will produce mostly garbage. But we have been educated to expect something useful from our activities and soon lose confidence if nothing useful seems to result. We should, therefore, reflect on whether and how we arrange our notes so that they are available for later access.

It takes time and a lot of effort initially. Patience and persistence are the answer. Eventually, it pays for the effort.

The most important traits of a Zettelkasten:

  1. It’s hyper-textual.
  2. It adheres to the Principle of Atomicity
  3. It is personal.
